Friends of Backcountry Wok: Danielle Leroux
Danielle Leroux, Founder of Renew Retreats
1. What is your favourite hike?
Within BC, it is hard to choose! For a long day hike, Panorama Ridge. Once you get past the first 6 km of switchbacks, the views are incredible! For an overnight adventure, Opal Cone (past Elfin Lakes) or Landslide Lake in Strathcona Provincial Park.
International: the Tour du Mont Blanc hands down. A 160 km trek in the French, Italian, and Swiss Alps.
2. What is your favourite thing about the outdoors?
When I hike I feel like my best self - whether that’s leading a group hike or doing a solo climb. The outdoors is where I go to escape, do something challenging, and always leave feeling better than when I started.
It’s what led me to starting my business Renew Retreats: holistic hiking retreats + outdoor education for womxn.
3. What advice do you have for new hikers?
Don’t do anything I did! I went for my very first hike in BC alone, empty-handed, and didn’t tell anyone.
Find a trusted friend or community you can start hiking with. Ease into it - don’t try to conquer an 8 hour backcountry hike on your first go. Bring the Ten Essentials and find yourself a comfy pair of trail runners or hiking boots.
Renew Retreats is hosting a Hiking 101 Workshop on September 11 in Vancouver. It covers everything I wish I knew when I started hiking! On September 15 we’ll put that knowledge into practice with a half-day hiking retreat for beginners in Lighthouse Park.
I’d love for you to join us! You can find more details at welcometorenew.com.
Friends of Backcountry Wok is a blog and social media series that features some of our favourite outdoor adventurers. It started as a way to introduce our Backcountry Wok customers and share the reason that they love our dehydrated meals. We were soon inspired by the unique and personal connections that people had with nature. We wanted to share that with you.
